A Short Guide to Sewing with Knit Fabrics

DETERMINE ELASTICITY

Use this stretch guide to determine the elasticity of your fabric by stretching a square piece of your fabric to the right side. You can then use the marked percentages as a guide for determining the stretch percentage. For this pattern, there needs to be at least 70%-90% stretch to your fabric. If you’re using fabric with a very high stretch percentage, there might be more ease to the finished garment and vice versa.

TIPS FOR SEWING WITH KNITS

  • Use a ballpoint or stretch needle
  • Always sew with a zigzag or another stretch stitch option, alternatively you can use a serger
  • Make sure to test your stitches on a scrap piece of fabric beforehand to avoid wavy seams
  • Always press knit fabrics with low heat
  • Finishing seams is not necessary for knit fabrics, as they do not fray

Printing & Assembly

Ensure your printer settings are adjusted to print pages at their true scale by selecting ‘actual size’ or setting the scale to 100%. Start by test printing page 1 and measure the test square to confirm accuracy before printing all pages. For a comprehensive guide on printing digital PDF patterns, click here to learn more.

Cutting Layout

Above you will find the recommended cutting layout for all sizes on 150cm wide fabric. Fold both sides of the fabric inwards to be able to cut all pieces comfortably on the fold. You can fold the collar piece in half to cut it directly on the fold. If your fabric’s pattern requires a specific layout in order to make the pattern match, you may need to allocate the pieces differently.

Before Sewing

Comments on the sewing instructions:

  • The seam allowance (SA) included in the pattern is 1cm.
  • The pattern pieces are always sewn together with the right sides of the fabric facing each other unless stated otherwise.
  • For elastic fabrics, always sew with a zigzag stitch, overlock/serger or other stretch stitch unless stated otherwise.
  • Pin all pieces together before sewing.
  • If the steps differ for the versions, it is specifically pointed out.
  • The pictures do not show all versions if the steps do not differ.

Step-by-Step Sewing Instructions

With all your preparations complete, it’s time to bring your vision to life! Let’s dive into sewing and create something amazing together.

Step 1: Cut out the pattern pieces. Carefully cut out the pattern pieces for the front, back, sleeves, and collar. Mark the notches on each piece. These notches will help you align the pieces correctly later on.
Step 2: Sew Shoulder Seams. Place the front and back pieces together with the right sides facing each other. Sew the shoulder seams. This will start to give shape to your top.
Step 3: Attach Sleeves. Align the notches on the sleeves with the shoulder seams and the notch on the back piece. Sew the sleeves to the armholes of the bodice. Take your time to ensure the sleeves are attached evenly.
Step 4: Sew Side Seams. Fold the top so that the right sides are together. Sew the side seams in one continuous line, making sure the armpit seams align perfectly.
Step 5: Prepare the Collar. Fold the collar piece in half with the right sides together. Sew the shorter sides of the collar together.
Step 6: Secure the Collar. Fold the collar in half along the long side, so the seam is hidden inside. Secure the layers of the collar with a stay stitch or a regular stitch using your overlock machine.
Step 7: Attach the Collar. Mark the halves and quarters on both the neckline of the top and the collar piece. Align these marks and pin the collar to the neckline. Gently stretch the collar piece as you sew it to the neckline to ensure a perfect fit.
Step 8: Hem the Top. Fold the edges of the sleeves and the bottom of the top 1cm towards the wrong side. Hem the top using a zigzag stitch or a twin needle. This will give a neat finish to your edges.
For a fun alternative, try a lettuce hem, which works beautifully with the bell sleeve view. Click on the image to watch a YouTube tutorial on how to sew a lettuce hem.

Common Mistakes and FAQs

When sewing a basic top, it’s crucial to avoid common pitfalls that can affect the outcome of your project. One frequent mistake is choosing the wrong fabric; opting for a fabric that is too thick or thin can make sewing difficult and the final product uncomfortable. Always pre-wash your fabric to prevent shrinkage after the first wash, as skipping this step can ruin the fit of your top. Additionally, ignoring the grainline when cutting fabric can result in a twisted or misshapen garment, so ensure pattern pieces are aligned correctly. Inaccurate body measurements can also lead to a poorly fitting top, making it essential to measure carefully and consider ease allowances. Uneven seam allowances are another common issue that can cause puckering and an unprofessional finish, so use a seam gauge for consistency. Lastly, rushing through the sewing process often leads to mistakes like mismatched seams, so take your time to ensure each step is completed accurately.

FAQ

  • Q: What type of sewing machine do I need?
    A:
A basic sewing machine with straight and zigzag stitch capabilities is sufficient for sewing a basic top, but I recommend using an overlock if you have one for a quicker and cleaner result.

  • Q: How do I choose the right size pattern?
    A:
Measure your bust, waist, and hips, and compare these measurements to the size chart provided. Consider ease allowances for a comfortable fit.

  • Q: Can I use any type of thread?
    A:
It’s best to use high-quality polyester or cotton thread that matches your fabric. Avoid using heavy-duty or upholstery thread for lightweight fabrics.

  • Q: What if my top doesn’t fit perfectly after sewing?
    A:
Minor adjustments can often be made by letting out or taking in seams. For significant fit issues, consider making a muslin (test garment) next time to perfect the fit before cutting into your final fabric.
